Transition to Central Districts Water

Until July 2027, each council remains responsible for water services in its area. Representatives from each council have formed a transition team to ensure a smooth transfer of responsibilities and continuity of service for communities.

Timeline

Our name

The name Central Districts Water was chosen because it clearly describes both the organisation and the region it serves, using a name that is already widely recognised and understood. It is not tied to a single town, river or boundary, which allows the organisation to grow in the future if desired. The word “water” is used rather than “waters” to reflect a single, connected system that brings together drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.

The logo is made up of three connected elements representing the three council areas, brought together as one organisation. The blue and green colour palette reflects water, land and environmental care, and incorporates tones drawn from the partner councils.

The name and logo were developed by council staff and have been designed to enable future te reo Māori elements and iwi involvement, as engagement with iwi continues.

The logo for the new organisation is a water droplet made up of layered shapes representing land, ranges and water.
